In a heartfelt tribute to legendary playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB), popular singer Yashwanth M.G. from Mangaluru has placed his name into the Golden Book of World Records by performing SPB’s songs for 24 hours. The feat, which began at 3 PM on June 3 and concluded at 3 PM on June 4, 2025, was dedicated to SPB’s birth anniversary and stood as both a personal journey and a cultural celebration.
A Meticulous Musical Homage
Titled “Baalagaana Yashoyana”, the marathon singing feat was a carefully orchestrated performance that blended discipline with devotion. According to the GBWR official rules, Yashwanth was permitted five minutes of break every hour for hydration, light meals, and vocal care. Yet, as he recalled, “The music gave me more energy than any food could.”
Yashwanth’s performance drew from SPB’s vast repertoire of over 40,000 songs spanning classical renditions, film hits, and soulful ballads in Kannadalanguage. He described the experience as deeply emotional:
“I grew up with SPB’s voice. Singing his songs one after another made me relive my entire musical journey.”
The Ensemble Behind the Voice
A team of seasoned musicians accompanied him throughout the marathon: Rajagopal on guitar, Deepak Jayasheelan on keyboard, Vaman K. on drums, Prajwal Acharya on tabla, Varsha Basrur on flute, and Sumukh Acharya on sitar. Their collective synergy ensured that the performance flowed seamlessly across language and genres, keeping the audience immersed.
Golden Book of World Records Recognition
The attempt was officially monitored and certified by Dr. Manish Vishnoei, Asia Head of the Golden Book of World Records. Praising the feat, he called it “one of the most disciplined and emotionally resonant record attempts” he had witnessed. This performance set a new benchmark while honouring SPB’s Kannada legacy with classical representation.
About World Record Holder
Yashwanth M.G. is a trained Hindustani classical vocalist, having studied under Madhav Acharya and Pandit Mahabaleshwar Bhagwat. A versatile scholar, he holds postgraduate degrees in Sanskrit, Kannada, History, and Hindi, and serves as an examiner at Gangubai Hangal Music University, Mysuru.
Beyond academics, Yashwanth has lived a multifaceted life- serving in the NCC Army (18th Karnataka Battalion), upholding Vedic priestly traditions, and excelling in music. His accolades include top honours in national TV reality shows such as ETV’s Edetumbi Haaduvenu, Suvarna TV’s Confident Star Singer, and Udaya TV’s Sangeetha Mahayuddha etc.
He has performed over 3,000 concerts worldwide, mentoted more than 5,000 students, composed a full-length Vande Mataram anthem for a world record attempt in 2018, debuted as a music director in Kanasu Kannu Teredaga, and reached the semifinals of Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
A Moment That Sang History
As the singing marathon concluded, Yashwanth reflected on the experience:
“I did not feel sleepy, nor did my voice waver. It was as though SPB himself gave me the strength to complete this journey.”
For those who witnessed it, the event carried an almost spiritual resonance, as if SPB’s presence filled the hall once again through Yashwanth’s devoted performance.
The Golden Book of World Records has officially certified the achievement, which is now being celebrated not just as a world record, but as a living reminder of music’s power to connect hearts, generations, and cultures.
