Nishan Sahib holds great significance in Sikhism. It is also called the Sikh flag. It is a triangular flag, saffron in colour with a dark blue Khanda symbol in the middle. Nishan Sahib is hoisted at all the Gurudwaras and religious premises of the Sikhs. Special respect is shown to the Nishan Sahib by the followers of Sikhism as it symbolizes the underlying values of the Sikh faith – one God, equality of all human beings, love and respect for all, a life of service and dedication, etc. The pages of history tell us that in the initial period of Dhan Guru Amar Das Ji, the colour of Nishan Sahib Ji was white to represent peace and simplicity. During the time of Guru Hargobind Singh Ji, Nishan Sahib was changed to yellow. In 1609, Dhan Guru Hargobind Ji hoisted the saffron Nishan Sahib at the Akal Takht for the first time. Many people believe that Nishan Sahib Ji was first used by Dhan Guru Hargobind Ji.
