The history of marathon races started in 490 BC. A war was fought between Greek and Persian soldiers in the Marathon field, 26 miles away from Athens city of Greece. In this war, Greek soldiers defeated 1 lakh Persian soldiers. To give the news of this victory, a Greek soldier named ‘Pheidippides’ ran for about 26 miles from the battlefield to Athens without stopping. He was so excited by this victory that he even took off his weapons and armour to run away. Even after being tired from the war, he kept running without stopping anywhere in the jungles, thorny bushes and mountain paths. When he entered the city of Athens, his feet were soaked in blood. He was out of breath. He told his countrymen “Nikki” i.e. his country has won the war, ‘Countrymen, we have won the war, celebrate’. He died only after giving this news. The Marathon race was included in the Olympic Games in memory of the runner named ‘Pheidippides’. The distance of a marathon race is 26 miles, 385 yards, or about 42.195 kilometres. According to legends, the reason for keeping the distance of the marathon race at 26 miles is that the distance between Marathon and Athens was also almost the same.
