The word Kathak is derived from the Vedic Sanskrit word ‘katha’ meaning “story”, and kathakara meaning “storyteller”. Kathak dance has a traditional and cultural heritage that gives it the status of an Indian classical dance form. Kathak evolved as an expression of devotion to Lord Krishna. Studies show that Kathak originated in Varanasi and spread to Lucknow, Jaipur and other parts of north-west India. Kathak dance evolved as a distinct genre with the spread of the Bhakti movement in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Like most art forms of India, Kathak is also based on the Guru-Shishya tradition or teacher-disciple tradition.
