Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women aged 15 to 44 years. Cervical cancer is cancer of the cells in the cervix. Most cervical cancers are caused by the HPV virus (human papillomavirus), a sexually transmitted infection. There are more than 100 types of HPV and about a dozen of them have been known to cause cancer. The early stages of cervical cancer usually do not involve symptoms and are difficult to detect. It may take several years for the first symptoms of cervical cancer to develop. Detecting abnormal cells during cervical cancer screening is the best way to avoid cervical cancer. Early detection of this type of HPV is important in preventing cervical cancer. The tests used to detect cervical cancer are the Pap test and the HPV test. These cervical cancer screenings can find irregular or problematic cells in their earliest form before they have a chance to turn into cancer. The incidence of cervical cancer has decreased significantly since the National Cervical Screening Program was started in 1991 and the National Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine Program was started in 2007. Experts say that this vaccine will be successful in preventing cervical cancer. Experts say that if girls are given this vaccine at an early age, they will be protected from such infections. The advantage of this will be that they will not get cervical cancer after the age of 30.
