Shri Mahakaleshwar temple situated on the banks of Kshipra river in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. It is the only south facing Jyotirlinga. The lord of the south direction is Yamraj who is the lord of death, that is why this Jyotirlinga is known as Mahakal. On the holy occasion of Mahashivratri, people from all over the world come to Ujjain to have glimpses of Shri Mahakal Baba with their reverence and devotion and the whole city of Ujjain resounds with the slogans of Jai Shri Mahakal. The festival of Mahashivratri holds special significance in Hinduism. This day is celebrated as the anniversary of the marriage of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. On this festival celebrated on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Falgun month, special prayers are offered to Lord Shiva and Shivling. It is believed that on this day Lord Shiva renounced renunciation and entered the household life and married Maa Parvati, therefore, every year this day is celebrated as the marriage of Shiva-Gauri.
