Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, is the main art tradition of the Mithila region of Bihar. This colourful painting was introduced to people in 1960 by a sadhvi of the Madhubani district, the late Maha Sundari Devi. Over time, this art was adopted by the local people here and then this painting became famous worldwide. A very interesting history of Lord Shri Ram and Mata Sita is associated with Madhubani painting. It is said that this painting was used by King Janak to decorate the city during the Sita-Ram marriage. This painting was seen in the mud-plastered huts of villages, but now it is also made on cloth and paper canvas. Even today, in many areas, Ram-Sita’s pictures are made at the time of marriage and they are considered to be witnesses of this sacred bond. Natural colours are used to make paintings in Madhubani painting.

Mithila paintings based on various social issues were created by Mr. Kundan Kumar Roy of Samastipur, Bihar during the Corona period. This young painter from Samastipur suffers from colour blindness, an eye problem in which the eyes are unable to see colours normally and the person suffering from it is unable to differentiate between certain colours. But these paintings made by Kundan Kumar Rai depict colours very well. During the Corona pandemic period from 22 March 2020 to 1 April 2022, paintings were made by Kundan Kumar on corona virus awareness, voter awareness and other social awareness topics. Kundan Kumar Rai’s name was registered as a world record by the Golden Book of World Records with the title of “Most Madhubani Arts Created During Corona Pandemic Period by an Individual” for creating the maximum number of Madhubani paintings during the Corona pandemic.

Painter Shri Kundan Kumar Rai says that Mithila painting teaches the art of living, the cultural fragrance of Mithila is hidden in every painting. Mithila painting is an art made between two lines, and these two lines are like the two streams of life, happiness and sorrow. The more people immerse themselves in this art, the more they will enjoy it. Shri Kundan Kumar Rai also says that he wants more and more youth to join this field, which will spread Mithila painting. Along with cultural preservation, it will also become a source of employment for the youth. Currently, Kundan Rai is engaged in showing the totality of Lord Shri Ram and the entire Ramcharit through Mithila painting.
